Breaking News: Kidnapped 10-year-old girl rescued thanks to sanitation workers

Two heroes have changed the life of a 10-year-old girl!

On Monday, February 8th, 2021, two Pelican Waste and Debris workers were working their usual morning route. As they drove around the area, they noticed something odd in a nearby field.

The workers instinctively knew that the situation was off, and decided to take a closer look. The two men noticed that there was a vehicle sitting in the empty field, and recognized the car.

Earlier that morning, an Amber Alert was sent out indicating that authorities were looking for a silver Nissan. Sure enough, the workers, Dion Merrick and Brandon Antoine, realized that they recognized the car from the Amber Alert.

According to ABC 6 Action News, Merrick stated, “Something told me, ‘Just look’... [I thought] ‘What’s that car doing way ducked off in in the field like that?’”. After they realized that the car matched the description, Merrick began livestreaming on Facebook. Additionally, he backed up the garbage truck that they were operating to block the driver from getting away.

During this time, the pair called 911, and explained the situation. Police arrived within minutes, and took the suspect, 33-year-old Michael Sereal into custody. According to ABC 6 Action News, “Sereal is listed on the parish’s sex offender database and was convicted in 2016”.

Both being fathers themselves, Merrick and Antoine felt that the decision to get involved was a “no-brainer”. Because these workers decided not to look the other way, 10-year-old Jalisa Lasalle is safe.
